Chapter 10God will take care of his people in Judah

1Ask the Lord for rain in spring. It is the Lord who makes the clouds that give us rain. He will provide rain for everyone, so that crops grow in the fields.

2When people ask their idols for help, the idols deceive them. People who use magic to know what will happen see false visions. People who explain the meaning of dreams tell lies. They cannot help anyone to be strong. As a result, people have nobody to show them the right way. They move around like sheep that have no shepherd to take care of them.

3The Lord says, ‘I am very angry with the shepherds of my people. I will punish the leaders.’

Like a shepherd, the Lord Almighty takes care of his people. He will cause Judah's people to become strong, like horses that are ready to fight in a battle.

4From among Judah's descendants a strong leader will appear.

He is like the most important stone at the corner of a building.

He is like a strong peg in a wall.

He is like a bow that is ready to shoot arrows.

Every strong ruler will come from Judah's descendants.

5Together they will be like brave soldiers who stamp on their enemies in the mud of the streets. The Lord is with them as they fight. They will pull down the enemy soldiers who ride on horses.

6The Lord says, ‘I will make Judah's people strong. I will rescue Israel's people. I will bring them back home, because I am sorry for them. It will seem as if I had never turned away from them. I am the Lord, their God, so I will answer their prayers.

7Israel's people will be like brave soldiers. They will be as happy as men that have drunk wine. Their children will also see this and they will be happy too. They will sing with joy because of the things that the Lord has done.

8I will call out to my people to come home. I have done what is necessary to rescue them. They will grow in number to be as many people as they were before.

9I have sent them away to live among other nations. But they will remember me in those countries far away. They and their children will remain alive. They will return home together.

10I will bring my people back from Egypt and from Assyria. I will bring them to live in Gilead and in Lebanon. Their own land will not be big enough for all of them.

11When my people need to go across the sea of many troubles, I will cause its waves to stop. I will cause the deep water of the River Nile to become dry.

Proud Assyria will become ashamed.

Egypt will no longer have the power to rule other nations.

12I will use my power to make my people strong.

They will give me honour wherever they go.’

That is what the Lord says.
