IntroAbout the Book of IsaiahIsaiah was a prophet. A prophet tells people what God is saying. Isaiah spoke God's messages from about 740 BC to about 687 BC. He gave God's messages to the people of Judah. Judah was the name of the Israelite kingdom in the south. Isaiah spoke about what was happening during his life. In about 701 BC, the king of Assyria attacked Judah with his army but God rescued Judah's people (Isaiah 36–37).Isaiah also spoke about what would happen in the future. He spoke about what would happen to Judah and to Israel. Israel was the name of the kingdom in the north. Isaiah also says ‘Ephraim’ and ‘Samaria’ as names for the northern kingdom. He also spoke about what would happen to some other countries near to Israel.Isaiah spoke about a future King who would be a descendant of King David. This King would come to save his people. He would also bring light to the nations of the world. Isaiah spoke about a child called Immanuel who would have no human father (Isaiah 7:14). This child would rule fairly, with great authority (Isaiah 9:6-7). He would be God's servant (Isaiah 42:1-9). God's servant would die so that God could forgive his people (Isaiah 53:1-11). Then, God would put his servant in a place of great honour (Isaiah 53:11-12). God calls everyone to come and receive his free gift (Isaiah 55).In the New Testament, we see that Jesus is the King that God promised to send. Jesus says that Isaiah's message is speaking about him (Luke 4:16-21).Isaiah also spoke about new heavens and a new earth that God will make (Isaiah 65:17-25). This is still in the future.
