Emmanuel
Someone may have seen something happen, or they may know about it. A judge may command people to say anything that they know about what happened. If the person refuses to tell what he knows about it, he is guilty of a sin. He deserves punishment.
Someone may touch something that is unclean. It may be the dead body of a wild animal or a farm animal that is not clean. Or he may touch the dead body of an unclean animal that moves near to the ground. Even if the person does not realize what he has done, he has made himself unclean. He is guilty of a sin.
Someone may touch something that comes out from another person and it is unclean. The person may not know that he has touched it, but later he realizes what he has done. He is guilty of a sin.
Someone may not think carefully before he makes a promise. He may promise to do something that is good or something that is bad. Even if he does not know that he has made a careless promise, he is guilty when he realizes what he has done.
If someone becomes guilty for any of these reasons, he must say clearly that he has done a wrong thing.
He must bring a female sheep or a female goat for his sin offering. That will be the price to pay for his sin. The priest will offer the animal to the Lord as a sin offering. The Lord will accept the animal's death to pay for the person's sin.
Offerings that poor people may give7The person may not have enough money to bring an animal as his sin offering. If so, he must pay for his sin with two doves or two young pigeons. He must bring them to the Lord. One bird will be a sin offering. The second bird will be a burnt offering.
He must take his birds to the priest. The priest will first offer to the Lord the bird that is for a sin offering. He must break the bird's neck, but he must not remove the head from the body.
He must shake some of the blood onto the side of the altar. Then he must pour the blood that remains onto the ground in front of the altar. That bird is a sin offering.
The priest must then offer the other bird as a burnt offering. He must do this in the way that the rules say he should. This is how the priest will make the person clean from their sin. God will forgive the person when the priest does this.
The person may not have enough money to bring two doves or two young pigeons. If so, he must pay for his sin with a tenth of an ephah of the best flour. That will be his sin offering. He must not put any olive oil or incense on the flour, because it is a sin offering.
He must take it to the priest. The priest must take some of the flour in his hand. He will burn this on the altar as a gift to the Lord, together with the other gifts. The smell of the offering will give pleasure to the Lord. It is a sin offering to the Lord.
In this way the priest will make the person clean from any of these sins that he has done. God will forgive the person when the priest does this. The flour that remains will belong to the priest, as the grain offerings do.” ’
Rules about guilt offerings14The Lord said to Moses,
‘Someone may not obey the rules about the Lord's holy things. He may not realize that he has done anything wrong, but he is guilty of a sin. He must bring a perfect male sheep as a guilt offering to the Lord, to pay for his sin. You must decide the value of the sheep in shekels of silver that they use in the holy place.
The person must also give money to pay for the holy thing which he spoiled. He must add one fifth more to its value. He must give the sheep and the money to the priest. The priest will offer the sheep as a guilt offering to make the person clean from their sin. God will forgive the person when the priest does this.
Someone may fail to obey one of the Lord's commands. Even if he does not know that he has done this, he is guilty of a sin. He deserves punishment.
When he realizes what he has done, he must bring a perfect male sheep to the priest. That will be his guilt offering. You must decide the value of the sheep in shekels of silver that they use in the holy place. The priest will offer the sheep to the Lord to make the person clean from his mistake. He did a wrong thing but he did not realize it at the time. God will forgive the person when the priest does this.
The sheep is a guilt offering for that person. The person is guilty of asin against the Lord.’
