Chapter 5Zechariah's vision of a scroll

1I looked up again. I saw a scroll that was flying in the air.

2The angel asked me, ‘What do you see?’

I answered, ‘I see a scroll that is flying in the air. It is about 10 metres long and 5 metres wide.’

3The angel said to me, ‘The words on the scroll are a curse that is going out over the whole land. The curse tells about punishment for people who rob other people. God will remove them from the land. God will also remove from the land those people who tell lies against other people.

4The Lord Almighty says, “I will send out this scroll to take a curse into the house of robbers. I will also send it into the house of people who use my name to tell lies. The curse will remain in their houses. It will completely destroy all the wood and the stones of their houses.” ’

5Then the angel who was speaking to me came forward. He said, ‘Look up. See the thing that has now appeared.’

6I asked, ‘What is it?’

He said, ‘It is a basket that people use to measure grain.’ He also said, ‘It shows the sin of all the people in the land.’

7There was a heavy metal lid that covered the basket. As I looked, the angel lifted up the lid. I could see a woman who was sitting in the basket.

8The angel said, ‘This woman shows what sin is.’ Then he pushed her down into the basket again. He put the heavy metal lid back on top of the basket.

9Then I looked up and I saw two women. They had strong wings, like the wings of a large bird. The wind carried them towards me. They lifted the big basket up high into the sky.

10I asked the angel who was speaking with me, ‘Where will these women take the basket?’

11The angel said to me, ‘They will take it to the country of Babylon. They will build a temple for it there. When the temple is ready, they will put the basket in it. They will put it in a place of honour there.’
