Emmanuel
1An enemy is coming to attack you, people of Nineveh.
They want to chase you away.
Put guards on the city's walls!
Watch the road into the city!
Prepare to fight with all your strength!
2Now the Lord will make Jacob's descendants great again.
Enemy armies have attacked them.
They have destroyed their land and their crops.
But the Lord will make Israel and Judah great again.
3Strong soldiers are coming to attack you, Nineveh!
They have red shields and bright red clothes.
They are ready for the battle!
The metal on their chariots shines as bright as fire.
The soldiers wave their spears in the air.
4They drive their chariots very fast through the streets.
They rush here and there across the city's open places.
Their chariots move like lightning.
They shine like bright lights.
5The army leader commands his best soldiers to go forward.
They almost fall as they run to the city wall.
They put up their shields to cover their heads
as they prepare to attack.
6They open the river gates and water pours into the city.
The water causes the palace to fall down.
7Nineveh's people must leave their city with much shame.
Their enemy will lead them away as prisoners.
The female slaves make sad noises like doves.
They use their hands to hit themselves because they are upset.
8Nineveh is like a pool of water.
Now its people are running away,
like water that is pouring out of the pool.
People shout at them, ‘Stop, stop!’
But nobody turns to come back.
9The enemy's soldiers say to each other,
‘We will take the silver and the gold for ourselves.
The city is full of many valuable things.
There is plenty for us all!’
10The enemy takes every valuable thing from the city.
They destroy anything that remains.
They leave nothing.
Nineveh's people are weak and afraid.
Their knees and their whole bodies shake with fear.
Their faces become white.
Nineveh no longer has any power11What has happened to the great city of Nineveh?
It was like a home for strong lions.
It was a place where the young lions could feed themselves.
It was a safe place where whole families of lions could live.
They were not afraid of any trouble.
12Nineveh's men were like lions
that could kill other animals for food.
They could provide plenty of food
for their wives and their children.
They could bring home as many valuable things as they wanted.
13But now the Lord Almighty says to Nineveh's people,
‘I am your enemy!
I will use fire to destroy your chariots.
I will cause your strong young men to die in battle.
You will no longer be able to attack other nations
and take their things for yourselves.
Other people will no longer listen to the voices of your messengers.’
