Chapter 12Rules for women who give birth

1The Lord said to Moses,

2‘Tell the Israelites, “When a woman gives birth to a boy, she will be unclean for seven days. She is unclean, as she is when she is bleeding each month.

3Eight days after the boy is born, they must circumcise him.

4His mother must wait for 33 days after the birth before she becomes clean again. During this time, she must not touch anything that is holy. She must not go into the holy place. After this time, she will become clean.

5If a woman gives birth to a girl, the mother will be unclean for two weeks. She is unclean, as she is when she is bleeding each month. She must wait for 66 days after the birth until she becomes clean again.

6The mother must wait for the right number of days after she gives birth to a son or a daughter. When those days have finished, she must come to the priest at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting. She must bring a lamb that is one year old for a burnt offering. She must also bring a pigeon or a dove for a sin offering.

7The priest will offer the gifts to the Lord to make the woman clean again. These are the rules for a mother who gives birth to a boy or a girl.

8If the mother does not have enough money to buy a lamb, she may bring two doves or two pigeons instead. One bird will be for a burnt offering. The other bird will be for a sin offering. The priest will offer these to the Lord to make the woman clean again.” ’
