Chapter 20God warns the Israelites to live in a holy way

1The Lord said to Moses,

2‘Speak to Israel's people. Say to them, “Nobody among you must ever give any of his children as an offering to the god Molech. That includes you Israelites and the foreign people who live in Israel. If anyone does that, you must punish him with death. Israel's people must throw stones at him to kill him.

3I myself will turn against that person so that he no longer belongs among Israel's people. He deserves that punishment because he has offered some of his children to Molech. He has caused my holy place to become unclean. He has brought shame to my holy name.

4The people of that man's town may decide not to punish him. He has offered some of his children to Molech, but they might refuse to punish him with death.

5If that happens, I myself will turn against that man and his family. I will cause him to become separate from his own people. I will do that to everyone who turns away from me to worship Molech as he has done.

6You must not try to speak to the spirits of dead people. Do not ask anyone to do that for you. Anyone who does that is no longer faithful to me. I will turn against that person so that he no longer belongs among Israel's people.

7I am the Lord your God, so you must be faithful to me. You must be holy.

8You must always be careful to obey my laws. I am the Lord and I cause you to be holy.

9If anyone curses his mother or his father, you must punish him with death. He deserves to die for his sin.

10If a man has sex with another man's wife you must punish both of them with death.

11If a man has sex with his father's wife, he has caused his father to be ashamed. You must punish both of them with death. They deserve to die for their sin.

12If a man has sex with his son's wife, you must punish both of them with death. They have done a very bad thing. They deserve to die for their sin.

13If a man has sex with another man, you must punish both of them with death. They have done a disgusting thing together. They deserve to die for their sin.

14If a man marries a woman and her mother, that is a wicked thing. You must burn the man and both the women in a fire until they die. That will stop wicked things like that from happening among you.

15If a man has sex with an animal, you must punish him with death. You must also kill the animal.

16If a woman offers herself to an animal to have sex with it, you must punish her with death. You must also kill the animal. They both deserve to die for this sin.

17If a man takes his sister to have sex with her, it is a terrible sin. It does not matter whether she is the daughter of his father or the daughter of his mother. You must remove them from among their people. The man has brought shame on his sister. He must receive the punishment that he deserves.

18A man must not have sex with a woman during the time when she is bleeding. If he does that, they have had sex while she is unclean They can no longer belong among Israel's people.

19A man must not have sex with his mother's sister or with his father's sister. If he does that, he has brought shame on someone from his own family. They must receive the punishment that they deserve.

20If a man has sex with his aunt, he brings shame on his uncle. They must receive the punishment that they deserve for their sin. Neither of them will ever have any children.

21If a man marries his brother's wife, that makes him unclean. Neither of them will have any children. The man has brought shame on his brother.

22You must always obey all my laws and my rules. If you do that, the land where I am taking you to live will not throw you out.

23I will chase out the nations who live there now, so that you can live there. You must not live in the way that those people live. I hate them because of all the disgusting things that they have done.

24I have told you that the land will belong to you as your home. It is a land where there is plenty of food and drink, enough for everyone.

I am the Lord your God. I have chosen you to be separate from other people.

25So you must know the difference between animals that are clean and animals that are unclean. You must know the difference between birds that are clean and birds that are unclean. You must not eat anything that I have told you is unclean. That includes any small thing that moves across the ground.

26I am the Lord and I am holy. So you must be holy as my people. I have chosen you to be separate from other people to belong to me.

27Any man or woman who talks with the spirits of dead people must die. Anyone who uses magic to learn about future times must also die. You must throw stones at that person until they die. They deserve to die for their sin.” ’
