Chapter 17Aaron's stick makes flowers

1The Lord said to Moses,

2‘Tell the Israelites to give you 12 sticks, one for each tribe. Write the name of the leader of each tribe on his stick.

3Write Aaron's name on the stick from the tribe of Levi.

4Take the sticks to the Tent of Meeting and put them in front of the Covenant Box.

5Leaves will start to grow on the stick of the man that I have chosen as my priest. In that way, I will cause the Israelites to stop complaining against you.’

6Moses told the Israelites to do this. The leader of each tribe gave him a stick. So there were 12 sticks, one for each tribe. Aaron's stick was among them.

7Moses put the sticks in front of the Lord's Covenant Box in the Tent of Meeting.

8The next day, Moses went into the tent where the Covenant Box was. He saw that Aaron's stick had started to make leaves. There were even flowers and almonds growing on it! That was the stick from Levi's tribe.

9So Moses brought all the sticks out of the tent and he showed them to the people. The leader of each tribe took his own stick.

10The Lord said to Moses, ‘Put Aaron's stick in front of the Covenant Box again. It will stay there as a sign to warn people who complain against me. They will know that, if they continue to complain, they will die.’

11Moses did what the Lord commanded him to do.

12Then the Israelites said to Moses, ‘Look! We will all die! We cannot escape!

13Anyone who comes near to the Lord's tabernacle will surely die! Must we all die?’
