Leviticus 10 - EasyEnglish Bible 2024(EASY)

Chapter 10God punishes Aaron's sons Nadab and Abihu

Aaron's sons, Nadab and Abihu, took their pots which held hot coals. They put fire in the pots and they put incense on top. They used it as an offering to the Lord which was wrong. They did it in a way that the Lord had not commanded them to do.

The Lord suddenly sent fire to completely burn Nadab and Abihu. They died there in front of the Lord's altar.

Then Moses said to Aaron, ‘This is what the Lord said: “People who serve me as priests must respect me. They must realize that I am holy. All the people must know that they should give me honour.” ’

Aaron did not say anything.

Then Moses told Mishael and Elzaphan to come to him. They were sons of Aaron's uncle, Uzziel. Moses said to them, ‘Come here and carry Nadab and Abihu away from the front of the holy tent. Take their bodies to a place outside the camp.’

Nadab and Abihu were still wearing their special robes. Mishael and Elzaphan carried them outside the camp, as Moses had told them to do.

Then Moses spoke to Aaron and to his other sons, Eleazar and Ithamar. He told them, ‘Make your hair look nice. Do not tear your clothes. If you show that you are sad, you will die. The Lord will also be angry with all the people. But your relatives, the Israelite people, should weep. They should be sad because the Lord has killed Nadab and Abihu with fire.

Do not go away from the entrance of the Tent of Meeting. If you do that, you will die, because the Lord has anointed you as his priests.’ So Aaron and his sons did as Moses had said.

Rules for Aaron and his sons

Then the Lord said to Aaron,

‘Do not drink any wine before you go into the Tent of Meeting. Do not drink anything that contains alcohol. If you do, you will die. This rule will continue for ever, for all your descendants.

You must know the difference between things that are holy and things that are ordinary. You must know what is clean and what is unclean.

You must teach the Israelites all the laws that I told Moses to give to them.’

Moses said to Aaron and to his sons who still lived, Eleazar and Ithamar, ‘Take the part of the grain offering that you did not burn as a gift to the Lord. Use it to make bread that has no yeast in it. Eat it beside the altar, because it is a very holy offering.

You must eat it in a holy place. It is the part of the grain offering that belongs to you and to your sons. The Lord has given it to you from his special gifts. These are the commands that the Lord has given to me.

The Lord has also given you parts of the offerings that are lifted up to him. He has given you the meat around the ribs and the top part of the back leg. You may eat these parts. Your sons and your daughters may eat them too. You may only eat these parts in a place that is clean. They belong to you and to your sons. The Lord has given them to you from the friendship offerings that the Israelites give to him.

Bring the top of the leg and the meat of the ribs, as well as the fat parts of the animal. Lift them up as a special gift to the Lord. These parts will belong to you and to your descendants. This is a rule that will continue for ever, as the Lord has commanded.’

After that, Moses looked carefully for the male goat that was the sacrifice for the sin offering. He discovered that they had already burnt it on the fire. So Moses was angry with Aaron's sons, Eleazar and Ithamar.

Moses asked them, ‘Why did you not stay near the holy place to eat the meat of the sin offering? It is a very holy offering. The Lord gave you this sacrifice so that the people would not be guilty. It is a sacrifice to make the people clean from their sins.

Look! You did not bring the blood of the goat for the sacrifice into the holy place. So you should have eaten its meat near the holy tent, as I commanded you.’

Aaron said to Moses, ‘Today the people brought their sin offering and their burnt offering to the Lord. But these terrible things have happened to me! If I had eaten the meat of the sin offering today, that would not have pleased the Lord.’

When Moses heard Aaron's reply, he was not angry any more.
