1Then the angel who had been speaking with me returned. He woke me up, like someone who had been asleep.
2He asked me, ‘What do you see?’
I answered, ‘I see a lampstand that is made of gold. It has a bowl on top and there are seven lamps. There are seven pipes that take oil from the bowl to each lamp.
3I also see two olive trees that are standing beside the lampstand. One tree is on the right side of the bowl and one tree is on the left side.’
4I asked the angel who was speaking with me, ‘What do these lamps mean, sir?’
5He said, ‘Do you not know what these lamps are?’
I said, ‘No, sir, I do not know.’
6Then the angel said to me, ‘These lamps are a picture of the message that the Lord says to Zerubbabel: “Your own strength and your own power will not give you success. It is my Spirit that will give you success.” That is what the Lord Almighty says.
7It may seem that a great mountain stands in front of Zerubbabel. But it will become flat ground! One day, Zerubbabel will bring the last stone to finish the temple building. Then the people will shout, “God is kind! He will bless it!” ’
8Then the Lord's message came to me again. He said,
9‘Zerubbabel has built the foundation of the temple. He will also finish the building.’ When that happens, you will know that the Lord Almighty has sent me to you.
10It may seem that only a little work has begun. But do not think that it is useless. The seven eyes of the Lord see everything that happens in the world. They will see Zerubbabel as he continues the work on the temple building. That will cause everyone to be happy.
11Then I asked the angel, ‘What are these two olive trees that stand on the right side and on the left side of the lampstand?’
12I also asked him, ‘I see two branches of the olive trees that are pouring olive oil through the two gold pipes. What is the meaning of those branches?’
13The angel replied, ‘Do you not know what they are?’
I said, ‘No, sir, I do not know.’
14So the angel said, ‘They are the two leaders that the Lord of the whole earth has chosen to serve him.’
