Chapter 3Zechariah's vision of the leader of the priests

In another vision I saw Joshua, the leader of the priests. He was standing in front of the angel of the Lord

. Satan stood at the right side of Joshua. He was ready to say that Joshua had done bad things.

The Lord said to Satan, ‘The Lord says that you are wrong, Satan. The Lord has chosen Jerusalem for himself. He says that you are wrong! Joshua is like a stick that someone pulls quickly out of the fire to keep it safe.’

Joshua was wearing very dirty clothes when he stood there, in front of the angel.

The angel said to the people who stood around him, ‘Remove his dirty clothes.’ Then he said to Joshua, ‘See what I have done. I have taken away your sin. Now I will give you new clothes to wear.’

Then I said, ‘Put a clean hat on his head.’ So they put a clean hat on his head and they dressed him in new clothes. The angel of the Lord stood near to them while they did this.

Then the angel of the Lord spoke seriously to Joshua.

He said, ‘The Lord Almighty says to you, “You must live in ways that please me. You must do the things that I tell you to do. If you do that, you will rule over my temple and all its yards. I will allow you to come with the angels who are standing around you.

Joshua, leader of the priests, you and all the other priests who are sitting with you must listen carefully. You are all like a sign of what will happen in the future. Yes, I will bring my servant, who is called the Branch.

Look! I have put a big stone in front of Joshua! It has seven sides. I will cut the words of a message in the stone. The message is that I will remove the sin of this guilty land in one day.” That is what the Lord Almighty says.

He says, “On that day, you will all ask your friends to come and sit with you. They will sit safely with you under your own vines and fig trees.” ’
