Chapter 15Rules about sacrifices

The Lord said to Moses,

‘Say to the Israelites, “You will go into the land that I am giving to you.

When you are living there, you may offer bulls, sheep or goats as a sacrifice to the Lord. You will burn them on the altar as a burnt offering. You may offer special sacrifices to the Lord when you have promised to do it. Or you may offer sacrifices because you choose to do it. Also, you will give sacrifices during your regular festivals. The smell of these sacrifices as they burn will please the Lord.

The person who brings the gift to the Lord must also bring a gift of flour. He must mix the flour with oil. It should be 1 kilogram of your best flour. Mix this flour with 1 litre of olive oil.

You must also give 1 litre of wine for each lamb. You must give that as a drink offering with each burnt offering or sacrifice.

If the animal is a male sheep, you must also offer 2 kilograms of flour. Mix this flour with 1.5 litres of olive oil.

Also, you must pour 1.5 litres of wine on the altar as a drink offering. The smell of this sacrifice will please the Lord.

A person can give a young bull as a burnt offering. This may be a special sacrifice that he has promised to give to God. Or it may be a friendship offering to the Lord.

With the bull, you must also offer 3 kilograms of flour. Mix this flour with 2 litres of olive oil.

Also pour 2 litres of wine on the altar as a drink offering. The smell of this sacrifice will please the Lord.

You must do the same thing for each bull or for each male sheep. And you must do the same thing for each male lamb or for each young goat.

You must do this for every animal that you offer as a gift to God.

All the Israelites must do this when they burn sacrifices. The smell of the sacrifices as they burn will please the Lord.

A stranger who is living in your land may want to give a gift by fire to the Lord. He must do the same as you do now, and for all future time.

These rules will be the same for the Israelites and for all foreign people who live among you. They are for now and for all future time. Both you and the foreign person must obey the Lord's rules in the same way.

There is the same law for you and for the foreign person who is living among you. There is only one set of rules.” ’

The Lord said to Moses,

‘Tell the Israelites this: “I am bringing you into the land of Canaan. After you have arrived there, you must obey my rules.

When you first eat the food from that land, you must give a special offering to the Lord.

You must give a cake as a special offering from the first part of your flour. Do this as you give your special gift from your threshing floor.

From the first part of your flour, you must give to the Lord a special offering. Your descendants must also continue to do this.

Someone among you might not obey a command that the Lord gave to Moses. But you might not realize your mistake.

It might be any command that the Lord gave to Moses for you and your descendants to obey.

If it was a mistake that the whole group did not know about it, this is what you must do. The whole group of Israelites must prepare a young bull as a burnt offering. The smell of this sacrifice will please the Lord. You must also bring a grain offering, a drink offering and a male goat as a sin offering.

The priest will use these offerings to make the all the Israelites clean from their sin. The Lord will forgive them. Their sin was a mistake and they have brought the proper offerings to the Lord. They have brought to him their burnt offering and their sin offering. So the Lord will forgive them for their mistake.

He will forgive all the Israelites and the foreign people who live among you. The sin was a mistake that the whole group should not have made.

If one person makes a mistake like that, they must offer a female goat as a sin offering. The goat must be one year old.

The priest will use this sacrifice to make the person clean from their sin. Then the Lord will forgive that person for their mistake. The person did not realize that it was a sin against the Lord.

The same rule is for all people who make a mistake like that. It is for the Israelites and for all the foreign people who live among you.

But someone might do something that he knows is a sin. He does it because he wants to do it, and so he insults the Lord. You must remove that person from among the Israelite people. Do that if he is an Israelite or if he is a foreign person who lives among you.

He has not respected the Lord's teaching. He has not obeyed the Lord's commands. So you must remove that person completely from among the people. He deserves his punishment because he is guilty.” ’

Punishment for a man who works on the day of rest

When the Israelites were in the desert, a man was picking up sticks of wood on the day of rest.

The people who saw him took him to Moses, Aaron and the whole group of people.

They were not sure how to punish the man. So they put him by himself, with a guard to watch him.

The Lord said to Moses, ‘You must punish this man with death. All the people must take him outside the camp. They must throw stones at him to kill him.’

So the people took the man outside the camp. They threw stones at him until he died. They did what the Lord had told Moses to do.

Rules about tassels

The Lord said to Moses,

‘Tell the Israelites to put tassels on the corners of their clothes. They must use blue strings to fix the tassels. This is a rule for you and for your descendants

When you look at the tassels, it will help you to remember all the Lord's commands. You will remember to obey them, and not obey your own ideas. You will not turn away from me and do the things that you yourselves want to do.

In this way, you will remember all my commands and you will obey them. You will belong to me, your God, as my holy people.

I am the Lord your God. I brought you out safely out from Egypt to be your God. I am the Lord your God.’
