And Antiochus son of governor of the Jews, and to all the nation;

And the contents thereof were after this manner:

King Antiochus to Simon governor, and to the nation of the Jews, greeting:

Forasmuch as the hundred and seventy and fourth year went Antiochus forth into the land of his fathers; and all the forces came together unto him, so that there were few men with he came, as he fled, unto Sampsames, and to ch. 14.16.the Spartans, and unto Delos, and unto Myndos, and unto Sicyon, and unto Caria, and unto Acts 20.15.Samos, and unto Acts 2.10 & 13.13 & 14.24, al.Pamphylia, and unto Acts 27.5.Lycia, and unto Halicarnassus, and unto Acts 21.1.Rhodes, and unto Phaselis, and unto Acts 21.1.Cos, and unto Side, and unto Aradus, and Gortyna, and Acts 27.7.Cnidus, and Acts 4.36.Cyprus, and Acts 2.10.Cyrene.

But the copy hereof they wrote to Simon the high priest.

ver. 13. But Antiochus the king encamped against ver. 13.Dor the second day, bringing his forces up to it continually, and making engines of war, ver. 14.and he shut up Tryphon from going in or out.

And Simon sent him two thousand chosen men to fight on his side; and silver, and gold, and instruments of war in abundance.

And he would not receive them, but set at nought See ver. 3-9.all the covenants which he had made with him aforetime, and was estranged from him.

And he sent unto him Athenobius, one of his See ch. 2.18.Friends, to commune with him, saying,

YE hold possession of ch. 14.34. See ch. 10.75.Joppa and See ch. 13.43 (mg.).Gazara, and See ch. 1.33.the citadel that is in Jerusalem, cities of my kingdom.

The borders thereof ye have wasted, and done great hurt in the land, and ch. 11.28,34.got the dominion of many places in my kingdom.

Now therefore deliver up the cities which ye have taken, and the tributes of the places whereof ye have gotten dominion without the borders of Judæa:

Cp. ver. 35.Or else give me for them five hundred talents of silver; and for the harm that ye have done, and the tributes of the cities, other five hundred talents: or else we will come and subdue you.

And Athenobius the king's See ch. 2.18.Friend came to Jerusalem; and he saw the glory of Simon, and the cupboard of gold and silver vessels, and Cp. 1 Kin. 10.5.his great attendance, and he was amazed; and he reported to him the king's words.

And Simon answered, and said unto him,

WE have neither taken other men's land, nor have we possession of that which appertaineth to others, but of See Ex. 23.31.the inheritance of our fathers; howbeit, it was had in possession of our enemies wrongfully for a certain time.

But we, having opportunity, hold fast the inheritance of our fathers.

But as touching See ver. 28.Joppa and See ver. 28.Gazara, which thou demandest, they did great harm among the people throughout our country, we will give Cp. ver. 31.a hundred talents for them.

And he answered him not a word,

But returned in a rage to the king, and reported unto him these words, and the glory of Simon, and all that he had seen: and the king was exceeding wroth.

But Cp. ver. 25.Tryphon embarked on board a ship, and fled to Orthosia.

And Cp. ver. 25.the king appointed ch. 16.1,4,8.Cendebæus chief captain of the sea coast, and gave him forces of foot and horse:

And he commanded him to encamp before Judæa, and he commanded him to build up ch. 16.9.Kidron, and to fortify the gates, and that he should fight against the people: but the king pursued Cp. ver. 25.Tryphon.

And See ver. 38.Cendebæus came to See ch. 4.15.Jamnia, and began to provoke the people, and to invade Judæa, and to take the people captive, and to slay them.

And he built ch. 16.9.Kidron, and set horsemen there, and forces of foot, to the end that issuing out they might make outroads upon the ways of Judæa, according as the king commanded him.
