Judith 16 - Revised Version with Apocrypha 1885, 1895(RV1895)

1And Judith began to sing this thanksgiving in all Israel, and all the people sang with loud voices this song of praise.

2And Judith said,

Ps. 150.4,5. Begin unto my God with Cp. ch. 3.7.timbrels,

Sing unto my Lord with cymbals:

Tune unto him psalm and praise:

Exalt him, and call upon his name.

3 ch. 9.7 2Mac. 12.28. For the Lord is the God that breaketh the battles:

Cp. Ps. 34.7. For in his armies in the midst of the people

He delivered me out of the hand of them that persecuted me.

4 See ch. 2.21-27. Asshur came out of the mountains from the north,

Cp. ch. 2.19,20. He came with ten thousands of his host,

The multitude whereof stopped the torrents,

And their horsemen covered the hills.

5 Cp. ch. 6.4. He said that he would burn up my borders,

And kill my young men with the sword,

See 2 Kin. 8.12. And throw my sucking children to the ground,

And give mine infants for a prey,

And make my virgins a spoil.

6The Almighty Lord brought them to nought See ch. 9.10.by the hand of a woman.

7For their mighty one did not fall by young men,

Neither did sons of 2 Sam. 5.18,22 (Gk.).the Titans smite him,

Nor did Bar. 3.26.high giants set upon him:

But Judith ch. 8.1.the daughter of Merari made him weak with the beauty of her countenance.

For the exaltation of those that were distressed in Israel,

She anointed her face with ointment,

And bound her hair in a tire,

And took a linen garment to deceive him.

And her beauty took his soul prisoner:

10 ch. 1.7. The Persians quaked at her daring,

And ch. 1.1.the Medes were daunted at her boldness.

11Then my lowly ones shouted aloud,

And my weak ones were terrified and crouched for fear:

They lifted up their voice, and they were turned to flight.

12The sons of damsels pierced them through,

And wounded them as runagates' children;

They perished Cp. 1 Sam. 17.47 & 2 Chr. 20.15.by the battle of my Lord.

13 Ps. 96.1 & 98.1. I will sing unto my God a new song:

Cp. Ex. 15.11. O Lord, thou art great and glorious,

Marvellous in strength, invincible.

14Let all thy creation serve thee:

Cp. Ps. 33.9. For thou spakest, and they were made,

Ps. 104.30. Thou didst send forth thy spirit, and it builded them,

And there is none that shall resist thy voice.

15 Cp. 2 Sam. 22.8,16 & Is. 64.1,2. For the mountains shall be moved from their foundations with the waters,

And the rocks shall melt as wax at thy presence:

Cp. Ps. 103.13. But thou art yet merciful to them that fear thee.

16 Cp. Is. 40.16. For all sacrifice is little for Cp. Eph. 5.2 & Phil. 4.18.a sweet savour,

And all the fat is very little for a whole burnt offering to thee:

But he that feareth the Lord is Ecclus. 10.24 & 25.10.great continually.

17Woe to the nations that rise up against my race:

Cp. 2 Pet. 2.9 & 3.7. The Lord Almighty will take vengeance of them in the day of judgement,

Job 14.22. Is. 66.24. Ecclus. 7.17. To put fire and worms in their flesh;

Cp. Mark 9.48. And they shall weep and feel their pain for ever.

18Now when they came to Jerusalem, they worshipped God; and when the people were purified, they offered their whole burnt offerings, and their freewill offerings, and their gifts.

19And Judith dedicated all the stuff of Holofernes, which the people had given her, and gave ch. 10.21 & 13.9,15.the canopy, which she had taken for herself out of his bedchamber, for a gift unto the Lord.

20And the people continued feasting in Jerusalem See ch. 4.13.before the sanctuary for the space of three months, and Judith remained with them.

21But after these days every one departed to his own inheritance, and Judith went away to See ch. 4.6.Bethulia, and Cp. ch. 8.7.remained in her own possession, and was honourable in her time in all the land.

22And many desired her, and no man knew her all the days of her life, Cp. ch. 8.2.from the day that Manasses her husband died and was gathered to his people.

23And she increased in greatness exceedingly; and she waxed old in her husband's house, unto a hundred and five years, and let See ch. 8.33.her maid go free: and she died in See ver. 21.Bethulia; and they buried her Cp. Gen. 23.19 & John 11.38.in the cave of her husband Manasses.

24And the house of Israel mourned for her Gen. 50.10. 1 Sam. 31.13. Ecclus. 22.12.seven days: and she distributed her goods before she died to all them that were nearest of kin to Manasses her husband, and to them that were nearest of her own kindred.

25And there was none that made the children of Israel any more afraid in the days of Judith, nor a long time after her death.
