What is atonement?

"Christ didn’t have any sin. But God made him become sin for us. So we can be made right with God because of what Christ has done for us" (2 Corinthians 5:21).

"'He himself carried our sins’ in his body on the cross. He did it so that we would die as far as sins are concerned. Then we would lead godly lives. ‘His wounds have healed you'" (1 Peter 2:24).

"But the servant was pierced because we had sinned. He was crushed because we had done what was evil. He was punished to make us whole again. His wounds have healed us" (Isaiah 53:5).

Atonement is Jesus dying for our sins in order to reconnect us to the Father.

Due to our sin, we were separated from God. The end result of our sin is death (Romans 6:23). Because Jesus died for our sins, we can be reconnected to the Father. Jesus is our atonement. He is the way we are brought back into a right relationship with the Father.

By Jesus being our atonement, God’s wrath was completely satisfied. When we become a child of God by salvation, God no longer sees us as sinners. Instead, He sees Christ when He looks at us. Our sins have been forgiven. Our lives have been redeemed. Hallelujah!
