What is the Old Covenant and the New Covenant?
"Then Jesus took bread. He gave thanks and broke it. He handed it to them and said, 'This is my body. It is given for you. Every time you eat it, do this in memory of me'" (Luke 22:19-20).
"'This is the covenant I will make with Israel after that time,' announces the Lord. 'I will put my law in their minds. I will write it on their hearts. I will be their God. And they will be my people'" (Jeremiah 31:33).
"Because God gave his word, Jesus makes certain the promise of a better covenant" (Hebrews 7:22).
The Old Covenant is the agreement God made between Himself and Israel. The New Covenant is the agreement God made between Himself and all those who believe in Jesus.The Old Covenant was specifically given to Israel. Under the Old Covenant, Israel had to obey the Mosaic Law (Deuteronomy 30:15-18). Part of obeying the Mosaic Law was offering animals as sacrifices for sin. Old Testament believers looked forward to the Messiah in faith. Believers are not under the Old Covenant today.
The New Covenant was put into effect by Jesus. The New Testament is the same as the New Covenant. The New Covenant provides the opportunity for salvation through Jesus. Once we come under the New Covenant by accepting Jesus, we are given forgiveness of sins and have eternal life with God.
God had already planned the New Covenant during the time of the Old Covenant (Jeremiah 31:31). Jesus fulfilled the Old Covenant and now offers the New Covenant to all who would believe. Are you ready to become part of the New Covenant?
