What is a missionary?

"So you must go and make disciples of all nations. Baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Teach them to obey everything I have commanded you. And you can be sure that I am always with you, to the very end" (Matthew 28:19–20).

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you. Then you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem. You will be my witnesses in all Judea and Samaria. And you will be my witnesses from one end of the earth to the other" (Acts 1:8).

Missionaries are people who tell others about Jesus.

We often think of a missionary as a person who lives in a hut in Africa, eats strange food, learns a new language, and tells people about Jesus. Yes, this person might be a missionary, but there are a lot of other types of missionaries too. A missionary is anyone who makes followers of Jesus. Sometimes a missionary goes to a different country and sometimes a missionary stays in his or her own town. All missionaries have these things in common:

•A missionary is sent by God.
•A missionary tells people about Jesus.
•A missionary helps people grow in their Christian walk. This is called "making disciples."

Can God send you as a missionary? Yes! As a child of God, you are called to tell the people you know about Jesus. He wants you to share about how He died for sins and then rose again. You can help your friends and family know that Jesus loves them. That makes you a missionary!
