Is it wrong to tell a white lie?

"Do not steal. Do not tell lies. Do not cheat one another" (Leviticus 19:11).

"The LORD hates those whose lips tell lies. But he is pleased with people who tell the truth" (Proverbs 12:22).

"The LORD hates proud eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that kill those who aren’t guilty" (Proverbs 6:17).

Yes, it is wrong to tell a white lie.

Many people believe white lies are not wrong because they don’t hurt anyone. This is not true. White lies are still wrong. Even though we may not think they hurt anyone, they do. When we lie, we sin against God. All sin is equal in God’s eyes (Romans 6:23a).

An examples of a little white lie would be saying you did your homework when you hadn’t. While this lie may seem "harmless," it is still sin. Even if our white lie may seem to make someone feel better or make us look better, it is still wrong. God specifically tells us lying is wrong and there are no exceptions (Proverbs 6:16-19).

Telling the truth can be hard, but it is always the right thing to do. If you are hesitant over lying or telling the truth, always choose to be honest. Honesty is always the best policy. The Bible tells us to speak the truth always (Ephesians 4:15). Telling white lies is always wrong.
