Why did God ask Abraham to kill his son?

"'Do not lay a hand on the boy,’ he said. ‘Do not harm him. Now I know that you would do anything for God...'" (Genesis 22:12).

"Abraham did this, because he believed that God could even raise the dead..." (Hebrews 11:19).

God tested Abraham. He did not really want Abraham to kill his son.

In Genesis 22:2 God said, "Take your son, your only son. He is the one you love. Take Isaac. Go to the place called Moriah. Give your son to me there as a burnt offering." God said this to test Abraham: "Abraham did this, because he believed that God could even raise the dead..." (Hebrews 11:19).

When Abraham was about to sacrifice Isaac, God stopped him. Instead, God showed him a ram caught in a nearby bush. Abraham sacrificed the ram instead. God promised to bless Abraham because of his great faith (Genesis 22:16).
