What does the Bible say about plagiarism?

"The Lord hates those whose lips tell lies. But he is pleased with people who tell the truth" (Proverbs 12:22).

"No one who lies and cheats will live in my house. No one who tells lies will serve me" (Psalm 101:7).

"Do not steal. Do not tell lies. Do not cheat one another" (Leviticus 19:11).

Plagiarism is stealing, so it is sin.

Plagiarism is when you copy somebody else’s work and say it is your own. Many people plagiarize other people’s homework, worksheets, and tests. This is wrong and dishonest.

Plagiarism is a form of lying because you are trying to pass someone else’s work off as your own. The Bible tells us lying is a sin (Exodus 20:16). Plagiarism also involves stealing somebody else’s ideas. The Bible tells us stealing is a sin too (Exodus 20:15).

As Christians, we should not participate in plagiarism. It is better to be honest in our work. In addition to being honest, it’s much more fun to come up with ideas on our own. If you are ever tempted to plagiarize, think about how you would feel if somebody tried to copy your work. Most likely, you would be mad and upset. Instead of plagiarizing, try your best to be original.
