Is it ok to watch movies?

"You say, 'I have the right to do anything.' But not everything is helpful. Again you say, 'I have the right to do anything.' But not everything builds us up" (1 Corinthians 10:23).

"Dear friends, you are outsiders and those who wander in this world. So I’m asking you not to give in to your sinful desires. They fight against your soul. People who don’t believe might say you are doing wrong. But lead good lives among them. Then they will see your good deeds. And they will give glory to God on the day he comes to judge" (1 Peter 2:11-12).

Watching movies can be fun! It’s wise to be careful what movies we watch though.

Most people like to watch movies. Maybe you have a favorite movie that you have seen many times. Watching movies is okay as long as the ideas we are putting into our minds honor God.

Here are some questions to ask when deciding if a movie is ok to watch:

Do you have permission from your parents to watch the movie? If your parents have said you can’t watch a particular movie, then respect that rule.

Does the movie contain scenes that have violence, bad words, or nudity? If so, it is not appropriate for children.

Will you be scared while watching the movie? If so, check with your parents first.

All Christians are given freedom in Christ (Galatians 5:1). This means we have the freedom to watch whatever we would like to watch. Even though we have this freedom, we need to be mindful of what we watch. We should ask ourselves if the movie will help or hurt our walk with Jesus. We don’t want to watch any movies that promote sinful behaviors.
