What does the Bible say about love?

"See what amazing love the Father has given us! Because of it, we are called children of God. And that’s what we really are! The world doesn’t know us because it didn’t know him" (1 John 3:1).

"Here is what love is. It is not that we loved God. It is that he loved us and sent his Son to give his life to pay for our sins" (1 John 4:10).

"Love is patient. Love is kind. It does not want what belongs to others. It does not brag. It is not proud. It does not dishonor other people. It does not look out for its own interests. It does not easily become angry. It does not keep track of other people’s wrongs. Love is not happy with evil. But it is full of joy when the truth is spoken. It always protects. It always trusts. It always hopes. It never gives up" (1 Corinthians 13:4–7).

The Bible has a lot to say about love, especially the love of God.

Love is a powerful thing. In order to know about love, we have to know about God. The Bible tells us that God is love (1 John 4:7–8). This means that God is the exact embodiment of love. God’s love doesn't change based on what we do or what we don't do. He loves us no matter what.

In fact, God loves us so much that He sent His Son to die for our sins (John 3:16). Out of His great love, we can now have a new life. His love can help us follow Him and obey Him. Rather than holding on to a false view of love, we can reflect on what love truly is—God.

With the love God has extended to us, we can love others. In other words, we can love others because He loves us. Similar to how God loves us with agape love, we need to love others with this same love. Agape love is unconditional, which means it is not based on what someone does or doesn't do. Showing God’s love to others will help them to know that they are loved by God, too.
