Our modern world is built upon the economy. Money is a driving force behind politics and culture. When a financial crisis hits, everyone feels the impact whether on a national level or personally. As Christians we must consider carefully how we will respond when a financial crisis hits. Although we still live in this world, we are no longer part of this world and must choose to react differently than other people in the face of hardship. The most important thing we can do is to trust in God's faithfulness. God is the one who created all things. He is the one who can give and then take away. We can trust Him when He does. God has also equipped us with our unique skill set, provided us opportunities to learn, and opens doors for us for employment. Whether the economy is going well or is in a financial crisis, we can be faithful to God and trust in His provision.
With a foundation of trust in God established, we can then take some practical steps in response to a financial crisis. We can start by reflecting on how we got into our current situation. It is important to ask ourselves if we have sinned and, consequently, put ourselves in this situation. If that is the case, we need to repent and pray for forgiveness. We should also consider how we handle our money; if we have handled it irresponsibly, we should make changes to steward our finances better in the future. God can use this difficult time to teach us and help us grow more mature in our faith.
After reflecting we should make a plan for moving forward. Likely we will need to make some changes. This may require us to limit our spending on non-essentials, pursue more education, or get a new job. We might have to humble ourselves and accept help for a period of time until we can get back on our feet. In addition, we should set up investments and savings plans to prepare us for future financial setbacks.
Things most likely will not change for the better overnight. It is crucial that we remember our blessings and give thanks for what we do have. Also, we should continue to help others as we are able. A financial crisis is not a time for us to worry as the world does. Instead it is an opportunity for us to be witnesses of God's ultimate authority over the earth by trusting Him to provide for our needs (Philippians 4:11–20).
