Does the Bible talk about art?

"He can make beautiful patterns in gold, silver and bronze. He can cut and set stones. He can work with wood. In fact, he can work in all kinds of crafts" (Exodus 31:4-5).

"What if someone leads one of these little ones who believe in me to sin? If they do, it would be better if a large millstone were hung around their neck and they were thrown into the sea" (Mark 9:42).

"Praise the Lord for the glory that belongs to him. Worship the Lord because of his beauty and holiness" (Psalm 29:2).

Yes, the Bible says art is a beautiful example of God’s glory.

God is the Master Creator. He created everything, including art. The first time the Bible directly talks about art is when God is telling Moses what the tabernacle should look like (Exodus 31). God wanted Moses to make sure the tabernacle was done with the best artistic skills. In fact, God chose Bezalel as the artist and filled him with wisdom, understanding, knowledge, and all kinds of artistic skills.

There is also mention of art when Solomon built the temple for God. God loves art because He is the perfect artist.

When we draw, paint, or create, we can do it with the purpose of praising God. You don’t always have to draw a cross. But you should always choose to create art that honor God. Any sort of "art" that depicts sin or bad things dishonors God. Whatever you choose to create, make sure you create it with the purpose of honoring God.
