My friend says he is gay. How should I respond?

"Don’t you know that people who do wrong will not receive God’s kingdom? Don’t be fooled. Those who commit sexual sins will not receive the kingdom. Neither will those who worship statues of gods or commit adultery. Neither will men who sleep with other men" (1 Corinthians 6:9).

"Let us not become tired of doing good. At the right time we will gather a crop if we don’t give up. So when we can do good to everyone, let us do it. Let’s try even harder to do good to the family of believers" (Galatians 6:9-10).

Be kind to your friend.

It is good to be kind to all people. If your friend says he is gay, it means he has same-sex attraction. In other words, boys like boys and girls like girls. It’s different than just “liking someone.” Being gay means you have romantic feelings toward someone who has your own gender.

The Bible says homosexual acts are a sin (Romans 1:26-27; Leviticus 18:22). With the LGBTQ+ movement, many people try to say being a homosexual is just a way of life or a preference. The Bible lists homosexual acts as sin. We can tell people the truth about what the Bible says, but do so in a respectful and kind way.

Do not be mean to someone who says they are gay. Instead, be kind to them. Tell them about Jesus and show them the love of God. A great way you can help your friend is pray for them.
