Does praying for sick people make them better?

"There is one thing we can be sure of when we come to God in prayer. If we ask anything in keeping with what he wants, he hears us. If we know that God hears what we ask for, we know that we have it" (1 John 5:14–15).

"We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him. He appointed them to be saved in keeping with his purpose" (Romans 8:28).

If it’s God’s plan to make a sick person better, He may answer a prayer by healing someone. It’s not always His plan, though.

God’s plan is His will—what He wants to happen. God’s will always happens because He is all-powerful. God’s will is always best because God is all-wise and all-good. Sometimes it’s God’s will to use sickness in a person’s life for a good reason. We don’t always know what God’s will for someone is.

So when we pray for a sick person, we can say, "Please make this sick person better, God, if that is Your best plan." Whatever happens, we can thank God. Even if a Christian dies, we can thank God, because that person has gone to heaven. For those of us who trust Jesus to save us from sin, we can look forward to heaven where no one ever gets sick.
