Why did Jesus tell us to chop off our hands and pluck out our eyes?

"How terrible it will be for the world because of the things that lead people to sin! Things like that must come. But how terrible for those who cause them! If your hand or foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It would be better for you to enter the kingdom of heaven with only one hand or one foot than to go into hell with two hands and two feet. In hell the fire burns forever. If your eye causes you to sin, poke it out and throw it away" (Matthew 18:7-9a).

"A huge cloud of witnesses is all around us. So let us throw off everything that stands in our way. Let us throw off any sin that holds on to us so tightly. Let us keep on running the race marked out for us" (Hebrews 12:1).

"People avoid evil when they have respect for the LORD" (Proverbs 16:6b).

Jesus is telling us get rid of the sin that is in our lives.

Jesus didn't actually mean that we should hurt our bodies. He meant that we should get rid of anything in our lives that's causing us to sin. He wants us to remember that He is the most important part of our lives. Anything that makes us sin and forget about Him is something we must destroy and avoid at all costs.
