What happened at the Mount of Olives?
"But David went on up the Mount of Olives. He was weeping as he went. His head was covered, and he was barefoot. All the people with him covered their heads too. And they were weeping as they went up" (2 Samuel 15:30).
"On that day he will stand on the Mount of Olives. It’s east of Jerusalem. It will be split in two from east to west. Half of the mountain will move north. The other half will move south. A large valley will be formed" (Zechariah 14:4).
"Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives. There the disciples came to him in private. 'Tell us,' they said. 'When will this happen? And what will be the sign of your coming? What will be the sign of the end?'" (Matthew 24:3).
Many important events happened on the Mount of Olives—Jesus taught His followers, He rode as king, He was betrayed, and He will come back!The Mount of Olives is the mount facing Jerusalem and it is a ridge across the east side of Jerusalem. In 2 Samuel 15:30, David and the people were weeping with him as he went up to the Mount of Olives.
Jesus taught on the Mount of Olives, a sermon that is now known as the Olivet Discourse. Jesus also made trips to the Mount of Olives to visit Lazarus, Mary, and Martha in Bethany.
During the last week of His earthly life, He went to the Mount of Olives three times. Each time He went, something very important happened. The first time was His triumphal entry into Jerusalem (Luke 19:28-44). The second time was His Olivet Discourse (Matthew 24 and 25). The third time was during passion week, which was when He was betrayed in the garden of Gethsemane.
The Mount of Olives hosted many important events, but it will also be the place where Jesus returns. Zechariah 14:4 says Jesus will physically descend on the Mount of Olives at His Second Coming.
