What is grace?

"But God loves us deeply. He is full of mercy. So he gave us new life because of what Christ has done. He gave us life even when we were dead in sin. God’s grace has saved you" (Ephesians 2:4–5).

"Everyone has sinned. No one measures up to God’s glory. The free gift of God’s grace makes all of us right with him. Christ Jesus paid the price to set us free" (Romans 3:23–24).

Grace means "getting something good that we don’t deserve."

Let’s pretend that you lie to your dad. He sends you to your room to think about what you’ve done. When he comes up to discuss it, he asks you what your punishment should be. You say, "I should be grounded from video games for a week." He says, "I agree. That punishment seems fair. You deserve that for lying to me. But instead of being grounded, let’s go out for ice cream." That is grace. You deserved to be grounded, but instead your dad gives you grace … and ice cream!

Jesus’ gift of grace is so much bigger than that! We all sin (do wrong things), and that sin separates us from God. We deserve to be separated from God forever, but Jesus gave us grace. He died on the cross to save us from our sin. He offers us salvation even though we deserve death. That is grace. And all we have to do to receive salvation is believe that Jesus died and rose again for us and accept His gift of grace! (You can read more about that here.)

There are three things to remember about God’s grace:

We do not deserve it.
It is not something we can earn.
Jesus paid for it.
