Judgment Day, also known as the great white throne judgment, marks the final day when God will judge all people who have not put their faith in Him. This judgment will result in the destruction of Satan and his demons, the end of the current world, and the creation of new heavens and a new earth. Every person will be judged according to their deeds, with those whose names are not found in the book of life being cast into the lake of fire (Revelation 20:11–15). Believers in Christ will not face judgment for their sins but will be judged based on the righteousness of Christ, receiving rewards and eternal life in perfection (Ephesians 2:1–10). Judgment Day is a day of both justice and hope, with the joy of eternal life for those who have received Christ but eternal separation for those who have rejected Him.

There are many passages, especially in the Old Testament prophets, where God pronounces judgment over a specific region or people group (Isaiah 34:1–8; Ezekiel 25:12–17), but that is different from the final judgment that is to come.

implications for today

Those who have received Christ can rejoice and hope in the coming judgment because it will bring justice and life in perfection and wholeness with God. Their pain and trials will be no more. Rejoicing and life will be theirs for eternity. For those who have not received Christ, God promises that He will judge them according to their deeds (Revelation 20:12–15). The deed that everyone will be judged for is whether they have rejected or accepted Jesus Christ as Savior. This judgment will bring consequences for rejecting His offer of grace, resulting in separation from God and eternal punishment (Matthew 25:46). God’s promise of His return is a promise of both hope for those who trust in Him and justice for those who do not.
