Why is the Bible divided into chapters and verses? Who did that?

"God has breathed life into all Scripture. It is useful for teaching us what is true. It is useful for correcting our mistakes. It is useful for making our lives whole again. It is useful for training us to do what is right" (2 Timothy 3:16).

"How can a young person keep their life pure? By living according to your word" (Psalm 119:9).

Three different men put the chapters and verses in the Bible to make the Bible easier to read.

Forty different people wrote the Bible over the course of 1500 years. God told each writer what to say so it’s all true and it all fits together. When the Bible was first written, there weren’t any chapters or verses. But the Bible is a very big book, so without chapters and verses, it would be hard to find anything in it.

In the year 1227, a man named Stephen Langton divided the Bible into different chapters. Many years later, a Jewish man named Nathan divided the Old Testament into verses. Then, after about 100 years, someone named Stephanus split the New Testament into verses. Most of our Bibles today still use these chapters and verses.

Since the Bible is divided into chapters and verses, we can now easily find the parts of the Bible we want to read or memorize!
