Does God know the future?

"Your eyes saw my body even before it was formed. You planned how many days I would live. You wrote down the number of them in your book before I had lived through even one of them" (Psalm 139:16).

"Before something even happens, I [God] announce how it will end. In fact, from times long ago I announced what was still to come" (Isaiah 46:10).

"He knows everything" (1 John 3:20b).

Yes, He does!

God knows everything. There is a big word for this—omniscience. That means there isn’t anything God doesn’t know. He knows the big things, and He even knows the little things—what we ate for breakfast and whether we brushed our teeth. Omniscience also means that God knows what will happen in the future—tomorrow, next week, and even to the end of the world!

God is also eternal. This means that He has no beginning and no end. Since God is eternal, He knows everything that will happen in the future.

Why does it matter that God knows the future? Since He knows what’s going to happen, we can trust that He wants what’s best for us. He even knows if we’ll pass our next math test. We can be sure that God already has our calendar written. We can thank Him for knowing everything—even our future! And we can trust that He has everything under His control.
