What are the Gospels in the Bible?

"God has breathed life into all of Scripture. It is useful for teaching us what is true. It is useful for correcting our mistakes. It is useful for making our lives whole again. It is useful for training us to do what is right" (2 Timothy 3:16).

"I have hidden your word in my heart so that I won’t sin against you" (Psalm 119:11).

The four Gospels tell Jesus’ story when He lived here on earth.

In these books, you can read all about Jesus’ birth, His death on the cross, His resurrections, His teachings, and all the miracles He did. The Gospels each tell the story of Jesus coming down to earth to share God’s love, which is God’s most important message to people.

The Gospels are found at the beginning of the New Testament, which is the second part of the Bible. The Gospels are Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The writers of these books were all disciples, or followers, of Jesus. They lived and traveled with Jesus while He was here on earth so they could learn from Him. This meant they were the best people to write about Jesus and His life!

God decided it would be best for four different men to each write their stories of what they saw and learned from Jesus so we could get the most information. This is like different people looking at a pet like a dog or cat; some people might notice the paws, and other people might notice the eyes or the fur. All are correct, but each person sees things a little differently. That’s how the Gospel writers wrote their books—they each had a slightly different way of describing how Jesus lived. God knew these different perspectives would be important so all the information could be proven as true.

Try to take a few minutes every day to read the Bible. Not only will it help you learn more about God’s love and His character, it will also help you to grow to be more like Jesus.
