6 Prayers to be Positive When You're Facing Anxiety, Negativity, and Trials

Praying to God to be more positive is an excellent exercise in faith. If you struggle with being positive, perhaps because of anxiety or negativity caused by life situations, the best thing you can do is to take it to God in prayer. The Bible never says that everything that happens in our lives will be positive–quite the opposite. That’s why we need a Savior and the words of hope the Bible offers that can make us feel and think more positive about life.

We are talking about true positivity regardless of what is happening in our lives.

God doesn’t want us to hide our pain from Him and others, nor does He want us to get caught up in “toxic positivity.” It can be very damaging if we aren’t truthful about our emotions or keep things bottled up so no one sees the real us. So, let’s look at six prayers to be positive that apply the Word of God to our negative situations or feelings to help us change our perspective.

What Can Get in the Way of Being Positive: Anxiety

Heavenly Father, it’s been said that You placed enough “fear not” verses in the Bible for every day of the year. You know that I am living in a world that is not my true home, a place where so many things can steal my peace, hope, and joy. It certainly isn’t a new problem since we’ve been harassed by evil since the days of Adam and Eve.

You know that sometimes I can see you doing amazing things in my life, and then something happens to pull the rug out from under me. Anxiety can take over. That’s what happened with the Prophet Elijah in the book of 1 Kings 19. He had just been involved in a miracle that You performed to shut down 450 evil prophets of a pagan god. After this experience Elijah must have been so sure of You and Your power. But then he heard wicked Queen Jezebel was out to kill him, so Elijah ran and hid in fear.

Father, anxiety has a way of making me forget what You have done for me in the past, but it is these remembrances that can keep me positive that You are always for me and promise to never leave me or forsake me! I can rest assured that You are always working for me and fighting my battles. Thank you Abba Father.

What Can Get in the Way of Being Positive: Negativity

Most merciful God, my life circumstances can cause negativity to become an ingrained habit when I can’t see beyond those circumstances. Yet You are always working in my life, and Your Word has much to say about changing my heart and mind to make me positively faithful and trusting.

In the Book of Job, I find the ultimate example of a man who had a reason for negativity. You allowed everything to be taken from him: his children, his property, and his health. Job repeatedly complained to You about his situation because he trusted that You were the only One who could do anything about it. Despite his negativity and righteous anger, he was positive about Your love and goodness. In the end, You didn’t explain what You allowed, but You did give Job double for what he lost.

So negativity can steal my belief that You are positively perfect in Your plans for me. I may need continual reminders that You are loving in Your sovereignty, and that all You do is working toward a great purpose. I can pray that what You said in Your Word  speaks to me today. And that can serve to change my heart to become more positive about my life, about You and about my world.

What Can Get in the Way of Being Positive: Health Concerns

Jehovah Rapha, I know You are the God who heals, but concerns about what is going on with me physically and mentally can really affect my ability to be positive. I want to “cast all my cares on You” as it says in 1 Peter 5:7, but as I do so, I still experience suffering.

I’m sure that the woman who had the issue of blood for 12 years (mentioned in Mark 5) felt much the same. She was rejected by everyone, including her own family and community. No one could help her to heal. But that was because You were going to do an amazing work in her life and be glorified through it. When she knew that Jesus was in town, she was confident that if she could just touch the hem of His garment He would heal her. And He did.

Thank you, Lord, that we can look to these kinds of examples to see how much you love. Even if you hadn’t healed her that day, she could still be positive that one day You would, if she put her faith in You. Help me also to trust and maintain a positive attitude as I watch you work in my life.

What Can Get in the Way of Being Positive: Financial Concerns

Heavenly Father, I know that you care about every aspect of my life. Lord, financial concerns at times drag me down and make it hard to be positive. I worry that I won’t have enough for what I need to do and that I won’t have anyone to help.

Lord, I’m reminded of the story about the Prophet Elijah and the widow. You sent Elijah to a woman who was living through a famine and only had enough food to make one more meal for herself and her son. You miraculously provided that day for her to have enough to feed the three of them, and gave her a supply of oil that didn’t run out. That morning, she probably felt the way I do some days, and yet that same day, You arrived just in time to save her.

Father, I want to trust you with all I have. I can turn my attitude to one of positive expectation that You will show me what to do with what I have and don’t have. Thank you that You always see Your children’s needs and show us that Your grace is enough to get us through.

Bible verses to meditate on when you are having financial concerns: Proverbs 3:5-6, Jeremiah 29:11, Philippians 4:19, Matthew 6:26

What Can Get in the Way of Being Positive: Relationship Troubles

Most merciful Lord, thank you that You are the author of relationship. You didn’t think it was best for Adam to be alone so you created a woman and a relationship for him. Unfortunately at times, relationship struggles–caused by wrong words, actions or attitudes–can take away our joy and make us feel like we can’t think positively about the rest of our lives.

Abraham and Sarah (as written in the Book of Genesis) were the epitome of relationship problems. You told them they would have a child, and when years and years passed, they thought they had missed something in your promise. So Sarah had her maid Hagar lie with Abraham and produce a son. But then Sarah was jealous and argued with her husband, telling him Hagar needed to go. He sent her away, heartbroken that he might never see his firstborn son again.

Father, we are only human and struggle at times to get relationships “right." You knew we would wrestle with others because we are constantly battling the world, the flesh, and the devil’s influence. But I trust that You will lead me as the Good Shepherd You are to have healthy and holy relationships. I know that looking to You will keep me positive in the midst of sometimes negative experiences.

Bible verses to meditate on when you are having relationship troubles: 1 John 4:7, Proverbs 17:9, 1 Corinthians 13:13, Colossians 3:13

What Can Get in the Way of Being Positive: Feeling Separated

Lord, I think I can pinpoint times in my life when I haven’t kept my focus on you and it affected my emotions and attitude. I can absolutely lose any hope of remaining positive when I stray from Your Word and daily worship. I know I was made to know You and love You, so when I get caught up in other things, I notice that I can be more negative or critical, or fearful. Please Holy Spirit, remind me each day that You are living inside me and You are my greatest love.

I know King David felt much the same when he fell from grace. You called him a “man after God’s own heart” and yet he strayed from you. He let lust overtake him and took Bathsheba from her husband, and had her husband killed. When he was confronted by the prophet Nathan and was told how disgusted You were by these actions, he asked Your forgiveness and that You would give him a clean heart. His punishment included losing his firstborn with Bathsheba, yet he acknowledged Your sovereignty and love nonetheless. And he didn’t lose the name “a man after God’s own heart” as a result.

Holy Spirit please remind me of this story when I start to lose positivity. Help me to examine if it’s because I have put something between me and God.

She spent 20 years writing for area healthcare organizations, interviewing doctors and clinical professionals and writing more than 1,500 articles in addition to marketing collateral materials. Important work, but not what she felt called to do. She is grateful for any opportunity to share the Lord in her writing and editing, believing that life is too short to write about anything else. Previously she served as Marketing Communications Director for a large healthcare system. She holds a B.A. in International Business and Marketing from Cornell College (the original Cornell!) When not researching or writing, she loves to spend time with her writer daughter, granddaughter, rescue doggie and husband (not always in that order).
