10 Powerful Psalms Every Christian Should Memorize

Committing Scripture to memory is a powerful way to grow closer to the Lord, to be prepared for spiritual warfare, and to encourage oneself or others during difficult times. For edification and to grow closer to God, one of the best books of the Bible to memorize (outside of the gospels) is the book of Psalms. It is a collection of songs and poems that focus on the relationship between the Creator and humanity.

They are personal, making it easy to identify with. Some of them are also short, making them an easy place to start if you have never tried memorizing Bible passages. This list of 10 Psalms is a mixture of short and long, of thanksgiving and of need, to strengthen the believer’s walk with the Savior - Jesus Christ.

1. Psalm 15

Number of verses: 5

Psalm 15 is a short psalm written by David that asks and answers an important question: who will spend eternity with God? The answer is the man or woman who lives righteously, who loves their neighbor and their God, and who seeks God’s will. While the death and resurrection of Christ secured salvation by grace through faith, these little verses are a good reminder of how Christians should walk daily.

Key Verses

“O Lord, who shall sojourn in your tent? Who shall dwell on your holy hill?” (Psalm 15:1).

“He who walks blamelessly and does what is right and speaks truth in his heart…He who does these things shall never be moved” (Psalm 15:2, 5b).

2. Psalm 18

Number of verses: 50

This Psalm is longer, but it is a reminder that God cares for those who love Him. In this passage, David praises the Lord for delivering him from his enemies, and magnifies the power and the glory of God. In times of distress, it is good to be able to recall Bible verses that remind us nothing can stand against God. He will always deliver His people.

Key Verses

“I love you, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold” (Psalm 18:1-2).

“In my distress I called upon the Lord; to my God I cried for help. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry to him reached his ears” (Psalm 18:6).

“He rescued me from my strong enemy and from those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me” (Psalm 18:17).

“The Lord lives, and blessed be my rock, and exalted be the God of my salvation” (Psalm 18:46).

3. Psalm 23

Number of verses: 6

This simple poem focuses on the Lord as the good shepherd, the one who leads and cares for people. This Psalm portrays God as a nurturer and focuses on His goodness. It is simple and plain, making it easier to learn.

Key Verses

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want” (Psalm 23:1).

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me” (Psalm 23:4).

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord Forever” (Psalm 23:6).

4. Psalm 91

Number of verses: 16

This moderately-sized Psalm has many wonderful ideas in it that believers can cling to when they need encouragement. The focus is on God as the Rock and the Fortress. It is full of promises that God will lift up the downhearted and that He will send His angels to protect and minister. It can be a great passage to share with someone when they are experiencing spiritual warfare.

Key Verses

“I will say to the Lord, ‘My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust’” (Psalm 91:2).

“Because you have made the Lord your dwelling place — the Most High, who is my refuge  no evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague come near your tent” (Psalm 91:9-10).

“When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him” (Psalm 91:15).

5. Psalm 100

Number of verses: 5

This brief Psalm of rejoicing and praise focuses the mind on the glory of the Lord, His goodness, and His eternal faithfulness. It would be good to have it memorized so that in the midst of busy days, you can still take a moment to recite it and have a time of worship.

“Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture” (Psalm 100:3).

6. Psalm 103

Number of verses: 22

Many of the verses from this Psalm have found their way into, or become the inspiration for, hymns and worship songs through the centuries. It is a powerful testimony to the righteousness of God, a good reminder of how a believer should live in light of God’s holiness, and offers up thanksgiving to the Lord for all He has done.

Key Verses

“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name!” (Psalm 103:1).

“The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. He will not always chide, nor will he keep his anger forever. He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities” (Psalm 103:8-10).

“As for man, his days are like grass; he flourishes like a flower of the field; for the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place knows it no more. But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him, and his righteousness to children's children” (Psalm 103:15-17).

“Bless the Lord, all his works, in all places of his dominion. Bless the Lord, O my soul!” (Psalm 103:22).

7. Psalm 116

Number of verses: 19

Psalm 116 is a hymn of thanksgiving and gratitude towards God for rescuing the psalmist (and us) from difficulties. But it also offers praise for the deliverance of the writer’s soul. There are allusions to the eternal salvation provided by the grace of God, so this is a good psalm to share with someone who may be considering accepting Jesus Christ as their Savior.

Key Verses

“The snares of death encompassed me; the pangs of Sheol laid hold on me; I suffered distress and anguish. Then I called on the name of the Lord: ‘O Lord, I pray, deliver my soul!’” (Psalm 116:3-4).

8. Psalm 117

Number of verses: 2

This Psalm of praise is short but powerful. It praises the Lord for His faithfulness and love, and has shouts of adoration. It is also short and accessible to commit to memory.

9. Psalm 121

Number of verses: 8

This Psalm was sung by people travelling to Jerusalem, the city at the top of a mountain, as they were travelling for feasts and festivals. This Psalm connects Christians to their history, and it can be motivating both for difficult situations, or simply to get through the day. It reminds the believer that God can help them with anything.

“The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade on your right hand” (Psalm 121:5).

“The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore” (Psalm 121:8).

10. Psalm 127

“Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain” (Psalm 127:1).

“Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward” (Psalm 127:3).

For generations, people memorized these traditional stories and songs. Memorization is a powerful way to absorb the salient truths of the Bible, to make it personal and real. Starting with the Psalms allows people to memorize a whole chapter of the Bible and to draw closer to the Lord in a personal way.
