How did God use dreams in the Bible?

"The Lord appeared to Solomon at Gibeon. He spoke to him in a dream during the night. God said, 'Ask for anything you want me to give you'" (1 Kings 3:5).

"But as Joseph was thinking about this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. The angel said, 'Joseph, son of David, don’t be afraid to take Mary home as your wife. The baby inside her is from the Holy Spirit'" (Matthew 1:20).

God used dreams in the Bible to tell people things.

In the Bible, God would use dreams to tell a person about the future or to give them instruction. One of the people God communicated with through dreams was Joseph. God told Joseph in a dream about an upcoming famine (Genesis 41).

Daniel was another person God spoke to through dreams. God told Daniel in a dream about the future of Israel (Daniel 2:4). Some aspects of Daniel’s prophecy have yet to be fulfilled! God will fulfill them in His time.

God spoke to people in the New Testament too. Paul was spoken to many times by God in dreams. In one of Paul’s dreams, God gave him a vision of Heaven (2 Corinthians 12:1-6).

God is capable of speaking to us in dreams today, but it is uncommon. He wants us to read the Bible and learn His wisdom there.
