Both Old and New Testaments state with certainty that God has a throne in heaven. Some Scriptures imply that the throne may be figurative (Matthew 5:34) while others suggest that the throne is quite literal (Revelation 7:9, 20:11). God is Spirit (John 4:24); thus, whether the throne is figurative or literal, the truth is that God has a throne. The prophet Isaiah “saw the Lord” on His throne; “He was sitting on a lofty throne, and the train of his robe filled the Temple” (Isaiah 6:1). The holiness, power, majesty, and glory of God— the respect and awe His presence commands— was overwhelming to Isaiah. “It’s all over! I am doomed, for I am a sinful man. I have filthy lips, and I live among a people with filthy lips. Yet I have seen the King, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies” (Isaiah 6:5). The apostle John also “saw a throne in heaven and someone sitting on it. The one sitting on the throne was as brilliant as gemstones—like jasper and carnelian. And the glow of an emerald circled his throne like a rainbow” (Revelation 4:2-3). Those surrounding God’s throne give Him glory, honor, and thanks saying, “You are worthy, O Lord our God, to receive glory and honor and power. For you created all things, and they exist because you created what you pleased” (Revelation 4:11).
God is on His throne. From this lofty place of sovereign rule and authority, God maintains His command over the affairs of the universe. “But the One who rules in heaven laughs. The Lord scoffs at them. Then in anger He rebukes them, terrifying them with His fierce fury. For the Lord declares, “I have placed my chosen king on the throne in Jerusalem, on my holy mountain” (Psalm 2:4-6). Jesus is that chosen king, the descendant of David and rightful heir to the throne. How Jesus obtained this place of honor because
“Though He was God, He did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, He gave up His divine privileges; He took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When He appeared in human form, He humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. Therefore, God elevated Him to the place of highest honor and gave Him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

Jesus, the King of kings and Lord of lords, died on the cross for you to pay the penalty for all your sins. He rose again triumphantly overcoming death and the grave. He lives and wants to be your Lord and Savior. By faith in Jesus, you can become a child of God, be forgiven of your sins and receive everlasting life (John 1:12, 3:16, Ephesians 2:8-9). Jesus is Lord of all creation, and He sits at the place of honor at the right hand of the throne of God. One day, every knee will bow before Him at the throne. For those of us who recognize God’s authority over all things, we have confidence that He is in control, even while living in this fallen, broken world. In a world of seeming uncertainty and chaos, wars and rumors of wars, natural disasters, signs in the heavenly skies, we can find comfort and peace, knowing with certainty that God is still in control and ruling in righteousness and justice on His throne.
