Who is Satan?

"The person who does what is sinful belongs to the devil. That’s because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. But the Son of God came to destroy the devil’s work" (1 John 3:8).

"So obey God. Stand up to the devil. He will run away from you" (James 4:7).

"The God who gives peace will soon crush Satan under your feet..." (Romans 16:20).

Satan is a fallen angel who chose to disobey God. He is completely evil and he wants to cause problems for God and all people.

Satan was originally created as a cherub angel for the purpose of serving God, but he chose to disobey God and other angels followed him in his rebellion. Because of his disobedience to God, Satan and his demons were thrown out of Heaven forever. What was the sin that Satan did against God? He refused to worship and serve God because he wanted to be served and worshipped. Satan wanted to be God.

After Satan and his demons were thrown out of Heaven, he became the “prince of this world” (John 12:31). Satan is the father of lies (John 8:44), the deceiver (2 Corinthians 4:4), and our ultimate enemy. God will destroy Satan in the future and he will never cause problems ever again (Revelation 20:10).

Even today, Satan is still trying to get people to disobey God and bow down to him rather than God. Satan tries to trick people into following wrong teachings in false religions and cults. Satan also tries to deceive us into believing lies about God, ourselves, and others. We don’t have to fall victim to his attacks because we can take up our stand against him with the armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18).
