Why do we pray before we eat? Do we have to thank God for food we don’t like?

"Give us today our daily bread" (Matthew 6:11).

"Then Jesus directed the people to sit down on the grass. He took the five loaves and the two fish. He looked up to heaven and gave thanks..." (Matthew 14:19).

We pray before we eat to thank God for providing our needs.

Christians often pray before eating meals. There is no rule in the Bible that says we must pray before we eat, but it is an important way to remember to thank God for giving us what we need. When Jesus taught His followers to pray, He included, "Give us today our daily bread" (Matthew 6:11).

Jesus set an example for us in this area. He prayed before His meals, including when He fed over 5,000 people at one time (Matthew 14:15-21). Jesus also prayed before He ate after His resurrection (Luke 24:30).

The apostle Paul also gave thanks when prayed before a meal, even when he was a prisoner (Acts 27:35). Every good gift is from God (Romans 11:36) and it is important to be thankful in all situations (1 Thessalonians 5:18).
