What is tithing? Why does God want us to give Him money?

"Honor the LORD with your wealth. Give him the first share of all your crops" (Proverbs 3:9).

"You should each give what you have decided in your heart to give. You shouldn't give if you don't want to. You shouldn't give because you are forced to. God loves a cheerful giver" (2 Corinthians 9:7).

We give to God because we're thankful for all that He has given us.

God asks us to give back to Him a part of the gifts He has given to us. Some people call this "tithing" and others call it an "offering." Usually, people tithe by giving their church a portion of the money they make at their jobs or doing chores for their parents.

In the Old Testament times (before Jesus was born), people were required to give 1 dollar out of every 10 dollars that they made. God no longer expects us to give this exact amount. Some people should give more money and others need to give less. Whatever amount we give, we are to do it with a cheerful heart. God loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7).

The reason God wants us to give money is so that we can help our church give food or money to other people who don't have enough. We should tithe to help pay for the costs of running our church and to help pay for the needs of our pastor and his family. Tithing also gives money to missionaries so that the gospel of Jesus can be shared all over the world.
