What does it mean that the wages of sin is death?
"When you sin, the pay you get is death. But God gives you the gift of eternal life. That’s because of what Christ Jesus our Lord has done" (Romans 6:23).
"Sin entered the world because one man sinned. And death came because of sin. Everyone sinned, so death came to all people" (Romans 5:12).
"But your sins have separated you from your God. They have caused him to turn his face away from you. So he won’t listen to you" (Isaiah 59:2).
The “wages of sin is death” means that if we don’t accept Jesus as our Savior, we will experience eternal separation from God.The Bible tells us that everybody sins (Romans 3:23) and the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). This does not mean that we will automatically die when we sin. Rather, it means that sin results in spiritual death.
A wage is something we deserve. For example, if your neighbor hires you to mow their grass for $10 and you complete the work, your neighbor owes you $10. You deserve $10 because it is the wage that you agreed upon. Romans 6:23 says, “When you sin, the pay [wage] you get is death. But God gives you the gift of eternal life. That’s because of what Christ Jesus our Lord has done.” Sin separates us from God and because of that, we deserve death.
There is great news in that verse too! Jesus died to pay our wage. While on the cross, He took on what we deserve. He died for our sin. When we accept His gift of salvation, our sins are forgiven and we can spend eternity with God.
