What is Vacation Bible School?

"[Jesus] said to them, 'Go into all the world. Preach the good news to everyone'" (Mark 16:15).

"I am not ashamed of the good news. It is God’s power. And it will save everyone who believes" (Romans 1:16a).

Vacation Bible School, also known as VBS, is a program many churches offer for kids during the summer.

Over 100 years ago, a New York doctor’s wife decided that she wanted to create a fun, safe program to keep kids off the streets during the summer. She called it "Everyday Bible School." Soon, the idea caught on and many other churches started the program. Today it’s called "Vacation Bible School."

Churches usually run Vacation Bible School as a way to share the gospel with kids who don’t normally go to church. But kids who already know God also enjoy VBS, because it’s a great chance to learn even more about Him. The Bible stories are all exciting. There are also games, crafts, and snacks at VBS, so kids love to come back!

VBS programs usually last for about five days during the summer, but some churches have different schedules to make sure as many kids as possible can come.

If you don’t go to church, or your church doesn’t offer VBS, you can ask your parents to help you find a local VBS program using the Internet. It’s a great way to spend part of your summer and learn more about Jesus!
