My mom says I talk too much. Does the Bible talk about being talkative?

"They talk too much. No one knows what lies ahead. Who can tell someone else what will happen after they are gone?" (Ecclesiastes 10:14).

"A wise heart accepts commands. But foolish chattering destroys you" (Proverbs 10:8).

"People have tamed all kinds of wild animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures. And they still tame them. But no one can tame the tongue. It is an evil thing that never rests. It is full of deadly poison" (James 3:7–8).

Being too talkative is not a positive trait, according to the Bible.

It is one thing to talk about important things, but it is another thing if we are just talking too much. Being overly talkative can be a problem. The Bible tells us, “Many worries result in dreams. Many words result in foolish talk” (Ecclesiastes 5:3). As King Solomon tells us in this passage, too many words result in foolish talk. Being too talkative can lead to careless words and conversations that do not have deep meanings.

Instead of being overly talkative, we need to be wise (Proverbs 17:28). Give careful thought to each word you are going to say. Saying the first thing that comes into your mind is not good. Choose to think about what you are going to say and know when it is time to stay quiet. Talking too much will cause you to talk out of line and say things that you may regret later.

Choosing to listen instead of speaking is wise. Sit at the feet of Jesus and listen to what He is teaching you through the Bible (Luke 10:39). Restrain from talking too much and start listening to God, your parents, and your loved ones. This can help you learn more. Whenever you are tempted to start talking too much, ask God to give you wisdom and humility. He will prove to be helpful.
