What is the difference between my soul and my spirit?
"The word of God is alive and active. It is sharper than any sword that has two edges. It cuts deep enough to separate soul from spirit. It can separate bones from joints. It judges the thoughts and purposes of the heart" (Hebrews 4:12).
"A person’s body without their spirit is dead. In the same way, faith without good deeds is dead" (James 2:26).
"My spirit, why are you so sad? Why are you so upset deep down inside me? Put your hope in God. Once again I will have reason to praise him. He is my Savior and my God" (Psalm 43:5).
The Bible tells us that our souls are what gives us life and our spirits are what connects us to God.The Bible talks a great deal about our souls and spirits, but it can get confusing. The Bible tells us that the soul and spirit are connected to one another, but they are not the same thing.
When the word spirit appears in the Bible, it is always referring to the immaterial (not physical) part of a person. This is the part of ourselves that allows us to have a friendship with God and our spirit allows us to be connected to God spiritually. Only believers are spiritually alive (1 Corinthians 2:11). People who are not believers are spiritually dead (Ephesians 2:1-5).
The words "soul" and "spirit" are both used in the Bible to refer to our emotions or how we feel (Psalm 43:5). When the Bible uses the word soul, it can refer to the physical parts of ourselves as well as the immaterial (not physical) parts of ourselves. All people have souls, but our souls have been dirtied because of our sin (Romans 3:23). The Bible tells us that when we die, our souls leave our bodies and return to God. Our souls and spirits are given us to God, so we need to take care of them and glorify God through them.
