What is faith?

"Without faith it isn’t possible to please God. Those who come to God must believe that he exists. And they must believe that he rewards those who look to him" (Hebrews 11:6).

"Because of what Christ has done, you believe in God. It was God who raised him from the dead. And it was God who gave him glory. So your faith and hope are in God" (1 Peter 1:21).

"God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son. Anyone who believes in him will not die but will have eternal life" (John 3:16).

Faith is trusting in something you can’t see.

We can have faith in many different things. Some are everyday things. We have faith that we can sit down in a chair, because we believe that chair will hold us. We have faith that the earth will keep orbiting the sun and not go spinning off into outer space.

We also can have faith in spiritual things. The Bible defines Christian faith in this way: "Faith is being sure of what we hope for. It is being certain of what we do not see" (Hebrews 11:1). We can’t "see" God, but we can still believe He’s there.

Having faith doesn’t mean we believe in something that can’t be proven. We have faith that we can sit safely in a chair because we’ve already done it many times before. And when we look around us, we can see that God deserves our faith and trust because He has shown that He exists through His creation. God also tells us all about Himself in His Word, the Bible.

Faith isn’t just knowing about something—it’s also believing in it. We can know it’s okay to sit in a chair, but unless we take action and actually sit in it, it isn’t really faith. Just knowing God exists isn’t enough. When we place our trust in Jesus for salvation from our sins, we are showing God that we have true faith in Him. After that, we continue showing our faith by following God and obeying the things He says in His Word.
