We are not victorious over sin by our own strength. Jesus has conquered sin and death already, and as we live our daily lives, He empowers us to walk in His victory.
We achieve victory in Jesus by believing in Him for the forgiveness of sins because He conquered sin and death.
We achieve victory in Jesus by surrendering to Him, obeying Him, and abiding in Him.
We achieve victory over sin in our lives by allowing Him to transform us by the work of the Holy Spirit.
How does Jesus' victory over sin and death impact you in the battles you face daily?
Where in your life do you struggle to surrender fully to Jesus' lordship and trust in His power?
How can meditating on God's Word, praying, and living in community help you live victoriously in Jesus?
How can we encourage others to live in the freedom and victory that Jesus provides over sin?
What does it look like for us as a group to "die to sin" and to live righteously or victoriously?
How can we depend on the Holy Spirit together to experience victory in overcoming temptations and challenges?
Victory in Jesus is thoroughly discussed in the New Testament. John 3:16-18 makes it clear that victory is given to us through Jesus, not achieved by us. Instead of relying on our own strength, we should trust that Jesus’ victory over sin and death is enough for us (Romans 5:17). Having victory in Jesus will not match the world’s standards of “victory”; it looks like dying to our fleshly desires, living righteously in the true life given to us from Christ (Romans 5:20-21; Romans 6:11-14; 12:1-2). Through Jesus Christ, we have victory over sin and death, and we can live knowing that as we walk with Jesus, we will continue to experience His victory (1 Corinthians 15:57-58; Galatians 5:24). Lastly, we have a Helper, the Holy Spirit, who assists us as we seek victory over sin in our daily lives (John 14:16; Philippians 2:12-13).
Victory is not our responsibility, and it does not come from our ability. Rather, it is found in Jesus as we submit to His lordship, obey Him, and abide in Him. It is our responsibility to rest in Christ (Matthew 11:28), coming to Him for strength, wisdom, and power to live for Him. Thankfully, the forgiveness Jesus provides frees us from the power of sin and enables us to walk righteously, keeping in step with Him and His work in the world. Once we are saved, we live in the freedom of Jesus’ victory over sin and death. We have the power to say no to sin and live in the abundant life God has for us. This looks like drawing near to God through reading His Word (2 Timothy 3:16-17), praying to Him (Ephesians 6:18), and surrounding ourselves to Him. We can also live in the victory of Jesus with fellow believers who will encourage us in our daily journey with Him (Hebrews 10:24-25).
