Awake:

a-wak' yaqats, ("to waken"; ‘ur, "to rouse up" from sleep; egeiro, "to arouse from sleep"): The ordinary terms for awaking from natural slumber: as of Jacob at Bethel (Ge 28:16); of Solomon at Gibeon (1Ki 3:15); of Jesus in the storm-tossed boat (Lu 8:24).

Used figure with striking effect of awaking from mental, moral and spiritual sleep: as when Deborah calls upon herself to awake to the fervor and eloquence of poetry (Jud 5:12); of Zion's awaking to moral vigor and beauty (Isa 52:1); of waking from spiritual death (Eph 5:14); from the grave in resurrection (Da 12:2). Poetically used of the rising north wind (So 4:16); of music (Ps 108:2); of the sword in battle (Zec 13:7); of a lover's affection (So 2:7); of God Himself responding to prayer (Ps 59:4). Also used of moral awaking, as from drunkenness: eknepho, "to become sober" (compare Joe 1:5).

Awake:

is used,

(a) in the Active Voice, of "arousing a person from sleep;" in Mat 8:25 of the act of the disciples in awaking the Lord; in Act 12:7, of the awaking of Peter, RV, "awake him;"

(b) in the Passive Voice, with a Middle significance, of the virgins, in "arousing themselves" from their slumber, Mat 25:7; in Rom 13:11; Eph 5:14, metaphorically, "of awaking from a state of moral sloth."

Awake:

is used of "awaking from natural sleep," Mat 1:24; Mar 4:38; of the act of the disciples in "awaking" the Lord, Luk 8:24 (cp. egeiro, in Mat 8:25); metaphorically, "of arousing the mind," 2Pe 1:13; 3:1.

Awake:

primarily, "to return to one's sense from drunkenness to become sober," is so used in the Sept., e.g., Gen 9:24; metaphorically, in Joe 1:5; Hab 2:7; lit., in Hab 2:19, of the words of an idolater to an image; in the NT in 1Cr 15:34, "Awake up righteously and sin not" (RV), suggesting a return to soberness of mind from the stupor consequent upon the influence of evil doctrine.

Awake:

from ek, "out of," and hupnos, "sleep," "to rouse a person out of sleep," is used metaphorically, in Jhn 11:11.

Awake:

dia, intensive, gregoreo, "to watch," is used in Luk 9:32, RV, "were fully awake." AV "were awake".
