パリサイ人たちは、イエスによる悪霊の追い出しを、ベルゼブル（サタン）の力によるものと解釈しました。これは、イエスに対する最大の侮辱であり、冒涜でした。パリサイ人は、そのことをもってイエスのメシア性を拒否しました。この時のイエスとパリサイ人との論争を「ベルゼブル論争」と言います。
