What is the age of the world? How old is it?
“Faith is being sure of what we hope for. It is being certain of what we do not see” (Hebrews 11:1).
“Your word is truth” (John 17:17b).
Many Christians believe the world is about 6,000 years old.God has given us a lot to go on in the first book of the Bible, Genesis. God tells us in the very first verse, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). If you read Genesis 1 and 2 you will see that God created the world and all that is in it in six 24-hour days. From there, we look at other clues in the Bible (like the many family trees it lists) to give us an idea of how much time passed before Jesus was born. We know that the time of Jesus Christ until now is around 2,000 years. When we use these clues, we see that the Bible reveals that the world is approximately 6,000 years old.
Most people who believe in evolution will say that the earth is billions of years old. Some of their dating techniques have problems, though, and aren’t reliable.
There is one thing you can be certain of: the eternal God who created this world can be trusted far more than a created human being, no matter how educated he or she is. God’s Word is true and will be proven as time goes by. Evolution cannot be true if you believe in God, because Adam and Eve were created as full-grown adults on the 6th day of creation, along with all the animals, birds, and fish, so there is no room or need for millions of years of things evolving. Believing God, by faith, solves our questions about how living things came into being and the approximate age of the world.
