How does the sun rise and set?

"God made two great lights. He made the larger light to rule over the day and the smaller light to rule over the night. He also made the stars" (Genesis 1:16).

"It rises at one end of the heavens. Then it moves across to the other end. Everything enjoys its warmth" (Psalm 19:6).

God created the sun and controls it for us to live on earth.

God created everything (Genesis 1:1), including the sun. Genesis 1:16 teaches, "God made two great lights. He made the larger light to rule over the day and the smaller light to rule over the night. He also made the stars."

How does the sun rise and set? The earth rotates so the sun is visible to where we live only part of each day. God made it this way for many reasons. Plants, animals, and people would not survive well if the sun was shining on one side of the earth all of the time. Half of the planet would be dark and too cold. The other half would be too hot.

If the earth rotated too quickly, we would also have shorter days that would destroy life on earth. God knew exactly what speed to use when He created the sun and the earth. Psalm 19:6 uses poetry to explain how the sun looks and feels to us: "It rises at one end of the heavens. Then it moves across to the other end. Everything enjoys its warmth." God has made the sun just right for our lives.
